CBHSPPU Newsletter - Oct '13

Dear Past Pupils

CALLING FOR COMMITTEE MEMBERS:

The Camps Bay High School Past Pupils Union (CBHSPPU) is about to finalise its first formal committee! Should you be willing to join this committee and able to give of your time to assist us with updating the history of the school and being part of the CBHSPPU, please e-mail the following details to cbhsppu@gmail.com:

•    Name and Surname
•    Cell-phone number
•    E-mail address
•    Year matriculated
•    Skills you are able to offer the CBHSPPU

Our first meeting will be held mid-November.

BREAKFAST / LUNCH BIKE RIDE:

Hear Ye Hear Ye!

On 16 November 2013 at 10h00 we will be undertaking the Epic Voyage of 1000 Bikes (AKA, Fun Ride, and 1000 bikes might be misleading, more likely thirty, or perhaps twenty). We will be departing on this manic journey from Camps Bay High School at 10h00 sharp. We will ride for young and old, with cubic centimetres big and small. Oh how we shall ride on that day!

We depart from the field, where we will round the Bay of Camps, pay homage to the Apostles as we pass over the Sugar Bush. We will pull in to the Republic and say howzit to the 79 ous. We will then cart our weary chariots over into our own Winelands. It will be here where we show our valour and restraint by passing through the Winelands and the Pedlar on The Bend for refreshments. Our journey will continue past the twin contradictions of Pollsmoor and Steenberg, and summit Ou Kaapse Weg. We will then carry our weary backsides to The Toad where we shall do lunch. From here we shall battle the treacherous and often underestimated Chapmans Peak, every man and woman for themselves, with no man or woman left behind. We will surrender our sacks of gold (R23 to be exact) to the Keepers of the Gate to the Republic, and make our way home, to the field of origin via the Sugar Bush and the Apostles, to tell stories of bravery, sacrifice and hardship.

Please note:
  • All safety gear to be worn, ATGATT applies (All The Gear, All The Time);
  • Have R23-00 (in exact change, please) ready for the Chapman's Peak Drive Toll Fee;
  • Please DO NOT jump the gate at Chappies! There will be a lot of us and it only makes things difficult for the people behind you;
  • All welcome; if it's roadworthy, it’s welcome (although, there shouldn't be any spoedkops lurking);
  • We will not be going on any highways, so all roadworthied cc's are welcome to join us; the more the merrier;
  • We will not be racing, we will have somebody leading the pack, so please remain behind him;
  • Usual traffic rules apply: keep a safe following distance. If you need to overtake, do so with caution;
  • If you choose to participate in the Camps Bay Old Pupils Fun Ride, you will do so at your own risk. The organisers of the event will not be held liable for any damage caused by you or anybody else;
  • We will stop at the top of Constantia Nek to regroup and take photographs, and discuss the battle ahead.

See here for the route on Google Maps:

For any queries about the ride, please contact David Taylor on 082-688-3325, or e-mail: david.taylor@marion-taylor.com. (Also, if you would like to buy or sell a house!)

ACHIEVERS’ / FRIENDS OF CAMPS BAY WALL:

During 2006 we celebrated 100 years of schooling in Camps Bay. It was an opportunity to connect with the greater Camps Bay High family, stretching back into our history. This family comprised two groups firstly, our former pupils, and secondly, our ardent supporters who are parents and friends.

We honour our former pupils and friends of Camps Bay High School who have achieved or made a difference in some way by displaying their photographs in the foyer at the main entrance of the school.

Should you have any nominations for this Wall, kindly contact the school on 021-438-1507 or e-mail Vivienne Ashcroft on campsbayschools@gmail.com.

Kind regards

CBHSPPU Swim-a-thon – 12 Oct '13

Camps Bay High School will hold a Swim-a-thon on Saturday 12 October 2013.

At Camps Bay High School we  continuously strive to provide better facilities for our learners and visitors. Our new swimming pool has encouraged a pleasing growth in waterpolo and swimming and a new pride in the learners who use it.
We need to continue with this progression and the upgrading of the aquatics area.

We desperately need to install a heating system into the pool in order to extend our training periods and so improve our water sports even further.

This is a very expensive system. We feel the obvious way to raise the money is through the very people using the pool, on a day-to-day basis.

For the above reason we are again hosting our annual Swim-a-thon.

Each person who is part of a water polo or swimming team will receive a printed sheet asking friends, family, neighbours and people of their community to sponsor them per length they complete at the swim-a-thon. For example if you sponsored a learner who swims 100 lengths and you have sponsored him/her R2 per length, you will donate R200, or if you wish, you can simply make a donation towards our fundraiser.

Date:  Saturday 12 October 2013
Venue: Camps Bay High School Pool
Time: 09h00 – 14h00

We ask all parents, friends, past pupils and sponsors to come and join us at the pool during this exciting event.

There will be breakfast, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, boerewors rolls, chicken burgers, cool drinks and other snacks for sale in the pool area throughout the event!

An arrangement of music, tables and chairs will ensure you are comfortable to enjoy the day.

If Past Pupils would like to take part in this fundraiser, please contact:
Ms K. Mobsby
Tel: 021-438-1507
OR via e-mail: kmobsby@campsbayhigh.co.za

CBHSPPU Forming a Past Pupils Union

FORMING A PAST PUPILS UNION

The initial way forward – forming a committee:

Before a Past Pupils Union can formally begin, a committee needs to be formed, to represent and make decisions on behalf of past pupils.

This committee will need to set up all structures in terms of constitutions, mission statements and goals. It will organise the running of all social and fundraising events, reunions and much more. This is a commitment to be undertaken by dedicated individuals.

The kinds of skills needed for these committee members are;
Secretarial – create a database and work with Communication Officer
Treasurer
Legal
Communication – website, newsletter, Facebook, Twitter, sms
Functions/events organising
Fundraising – raffles
Clubs – waterpolo/running/cycling
Sports days – summer and winter
Clothing

Members of the committee can come from all class year groups that are willing to contribute time to forming a Past Pupils Union.

People willing to join this committee should be willing to give up time and commit to the filling in of missing parts of our history and being a vital part of our future – Camps Bay High School's past pupils!

Please e-mail the following to cbhsppu@gmail.com if you are interested in finding out more about this request or to offer your services and expertise in becoming a committee member:
Name and Surname
Cellphone number
Year matriculated
Skill you would like to offer to the start of a past pupil committee

What is the goal/aim of the Past Pupils Union?

Camps Bay High School has helped to develop, empower and guide so many of us to where we are today. The lessons learned, friendships made and good times all went perhaps unnoticed then, now come to life when we reunite with our fellow past pupils over a meal, drink or just in passing.

The two main objectives for the Past Pupils Union are:

     • To promote fellowship and interaction amongst Past Pupils, and

     • To support Camps Bay High School.

Fellowship and interaction are promoted through regular communication through a website and newsletters to keep members well informed of school and Past Pupil activities; social and sporting gatherings; class reunions and dinners.

The benefits which flow from these activities range from maintaining friendships formed at school for life, to business partnerships and general business networking.

Support is given by attending academic, cultural and sports events and showing a real interest in our school and its achievements through pupils who excel.

In the current environment where State financial support for capital improvements and extensions is negligible, the Past Pupils Union has a vital support role to play in fundraising projects. Success in this regard means our school will remain a centre of educational excellence and will continue to produce outstanding leaders across the spectrum of business, cultural, sport and humanitarian activities.

Past Pupils also make contributions to Camps Bay High School by serving on various committees and by helping the three Camps Bay Schools in a variety of other ways such as assisting with sports coaching and refereeing and as guest speakers at school ceremonies.

The Past Pupils Union will ensure that the traditions are not lost over time and will allow you, the past pupil, to have a connection with your school, teachers and old friends.

CBHSPPU Big Changes at CBHS - Aug '13

Big Changes Over The Past Five Years:

Camps Bay High School's management, consisting of teachers and governors, has achieved some enormous feats over the past few years.

Below are some of the major events and infrastructural upgrades that have happened to our school since our Centenary celebrations.

Gymnasium – 2007
  • Camps Bay High School is now fortunate enough to boast a fully equipped gym. This gym is used for sports teams, gym classes during the school day and is available for after-school use.

Swimming Pool – 2010

  • Aquatic Sports have always been and will remain a strong focus at Camps Bay High School. With the addition of a brand new swimming pool, Waterpolo has grown massively in numbers and success. Our Boys’ Waterpolo Team was unbeaten last season!

Quadrangles – 2013
  • The school’s covered Dennis Abrahams Quadrangle (DAQ) and the Outside Quadrangle have been resurfaced and painted for Tennis, Basketball and Netball. These facilities are also used in the Physical Education lessons.

School Hall (Stage, Sound Box, Ceiling) – 2012
  • With the School Hall being used for assemblies, award ceremonies and general meetings, there was a definite need for an upgrade to this venue. However, the most positive changes have been made to our successful Dance Department's facilities, where our students can now perform with a new lease on life and can compete at a much higher level.

Entrance – 2010
  • The SGB (School Governing Body) has made massive changes and upgrades to the general appearance of our school and its corridors, with the addition of plants and year photographs in the passage. No area of our school can match our main entrance, which now has some amazing pictures of Camps Bay, a statue presented by the class of 2012 and our ‘Friends of Camps Bay’ and ‘Achievers' Wall’.

White Boards – 2009
  • All our classrooms have been equipped with interactive white boards or video projectors to improve our use of technology. Gone are the chalk boards of old. Using computers and interactive projection screens, teaching has reached new heights with visuals and videos. This has made for a much more interesting and interactive mode of teaching and learning.

Cultural Venue – 2013
  • With high calibre productions taking place such as, "Little Shop of Horrors", "Fame" and many more, combined with the growth and great success of Drama as a subject, a new Cultural Venue was inevitable. This will also provide our Music Department with a versatile venue for intimate performances as well as bigger concerts for our bands, marimbas and ensembles.
